What is the TMJ?
The Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull (temporal bone). It includes a disc that allows smooth movement and is supported by muscles and ligaments. TMJ problems can cause pain due to injury, inflammation, poor posture, habits, or growth issues.
Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction
Common symptoms include:
- Jaw pain and facial muscle discomfort
- Clicking, grinding, or locking of the jaw
- Headaches and dizziness
- Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
- Pain during talking, chewing, or yawning
- Ear pain, ringing (tinnitus), or hearing loss
Causes of TMJ Dysfunction
TMJ dysfunction often results from a combination of factors:
- Trauma or injury to the jaw
- Excessive jaw muscle activity (clenching or grinding)
- Wear and tear of joint cartilage
- Arthritis
- Stress-related increased pain sensitivity
